What Is GOTS Organic Certification?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world's leading certification for organic fibers. It ensures compliance throughout the entire textile supply chain, from raw material harvesting to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. The certification includes labeling that provides credible assurance to consumers.
The GOTS Organic Certification is accepted globally, ensuring that certified goods adhere to recognized organic standards across all major markets.
Why Are Non-Organic Cotton Garments Harmful to the Environment?
Cotton is a critical industry that supports around 100 million rural families worldwide, particularly in some of the poorest countries. However, conventional cotton farming has significant negative impacts:
- Pesticide Use on Cotton Crops
- GM Cotton
- Fossil Fuel Derived Fertilizers
- Cotton and the Soil as a Carbon Sink
- Water Consumption
- Loss of Biodiversity
- Organic Cotton
- Organic Cotton - In Conversion
Organic Cotton
Since cotton cannot grow in the UK, all organic cotton is imported. To sell organic cotton garments in the UK, the cotton must meet both the organic certification standards of its country of origin and the relevant EU regulations.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the most common and comprehensive certification in the UK. Key requirements include:
- The land must be pesticide-free for at least three years.
- Artificial fertilizers are prohibited, and soil health is enhanced using natural methods.
- Farmers and factory workers are ensured a fair wage under GOTS certification.
Organic Cotton - In Conversion
GOTS certification also supports the labeling of cotton during the organic conversion period (e.g., "100% organic cotton – in conversion"). This refers to cotton grown on land recently converted to organic farming methods (typically within the last 2-3 years).
Although no chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are used, soil residues may still be present. The conversion period is particularly challenging for farmers due to:
- An initial drop in crop yield.
- Inability to secure premium organic pricing.
Supporting "organic cotton – in conversion" helps farmers transition to sustainable practices while overcoming these challenges.
